Energy Efficiency in Aluminum Window and Door Systems: Selection of Thermally Insulated Profiles and Glass

Bahçelievler 3017 Interior Wall and Window Details

When it comes to the thermal insulation of a villa, wall and roof insulation are the first things that come to mind; however, a significant portion of energy loss stems from window and door frames—that is, the aluminum profile system. Unless the right profile, the right glazing package, and the right seal details come together, even the highest-quality wall insulation will not deliver the expected performance. In this article, we take a closer look at three technical factors that determine energy efficiency in the selection of aluminum frames for villa projects: the thermal break profile structure, the choice of glazing, and the seal details.

What Is a Thermally Broken Profile, and Why Is It Important?

Aluminum is a metal that conducts heat very quickly; therefore, single-piece (seamless) aluminum profiles act as thermal bridges, directly transferring hot or cold outdoor air into the interior. In thermally insulated profile systems, however, a polyamide (nylon-based) insulation barrier is placed between the profile’s inner and outer surfaces; this barrier interrupts the aluminum’s thermal conductivity, significantly reducing heat transfer between the interior and exterior. When selecting window and door frames for villa projects, our first criteria are whether this broken-profile design is present and the width of the polyamide barrier; the wider and higher-quality the barrier, the lower the profile’s thermal transmittance coefficient—and thus, the higher its insulation performance.

Choosing a Glass Package: Double-Pane Glass, Low-E Coating, and Gas-Filled Insulation

No matter how good the frame profile is, a window’s thermal performance is largely determined by the glass, since the majority of the window’s surface area consists of glass. The glazing packages we prefer for villa projects consist of systems in which an insulating gas, such as argon, is filled between two (or in some cases three) panes of glass, and at least one surface is coated with a Low-E (low-emissivity) coating. The Low-E coating reduces both heating and cooling loads by limiting the escape of indoor heat in the winter and preventing excessive solar heat from entering in the summer. The gaskets and sealant details where the glass fits into the frame are also an integral part of this performance; if the surrounding gaskets do not fit properly, even the best glass unit cannot prevent heat loss on its own.

Seal Details and the Role of Proper Installation

In aluminum window systems, thermal insulation is not limited to just the profiles and glass; the weatherstripping and gasket systems between the sash and the frame are another critical factor determining airtightness. The use of double or triple rows of gaskets is a solution that reduces both heat loss and air and water leakage in windy and humid coastal regions. In addition, the joints and fill material around the frame must be properly installed during the window’s installation into the wall cavity; no matter how high-quality the gaskets are, gaps left during installation can eventually turn into new thermal bridges over time. For this reason, we carry out window and door installation in coordination with our rough construction and insulation teams, under a single point of responsibility.

Our Approach to Selecting Joinery at İmerek Yapı

By carrying out the rough construction ourselves—using our own team and formwork system, without subcontractors—we ensure that the joinery details are planned from the very beginning of the project. We do not treat the selection of profiles, glass units, and gaskets as three separate decisions, but rather as part of the villa’s overall thermal insulation strategy.
